The Joy of "Minions and Monsters"

Hi everyone,

I didn't write last month and I'm not going to write much today because a lot has been going on.  I'm okay, mostly, but I had a health thing late last month that was scary and has taken me a bit to bounce back from.  It fleetingly occurred to me to be upset that I wasn't going to write something for June, but I'm mostly proud to acknowledge that I pretty quickly let that go given the circumstances.  I've acknowledged repeatedly that I need to release my perfectionism, and if I don't do it after two hospital stays, when will I?

What I'm deeply grateful to share is that, during this slower than anticipated recovery process, Husband and I managed to take our kids on their first ever outing to see a move in a theater.  They've been really into the "Despicable Me" oeuvre lately, among some other selections, so the recent release of "Minions & Monsters" (2026) seemed perfect; a relatively known quantity that would hold their interest and probably wouldn't be too scary or super problematic.

I cannot begin to tell you what a joy it was to not only get to share this rite of passage with my children, but also to do so at a beloved historic theater in our beloved city.  I can still readily dip into the deep well of warming joy and love that comes from knowing that my kids saw their first movie there.  It felt like such a fun indulgence having each of them choose a little treat at the concession stand in addition to our communal popcorn.  It was so sweet watching my 3-year old figure out how to balance on the folding theater seats and hearing my 6-year-old giggle at the movie's the silly jokes.

I will never stop being grateful for this experience.  Do I care that the movie was a 2?  Absolutely not--the movie's quality honestly wasn't really the point.  Hopefully there's plenty of time in the future for movies that will blow their minds in the best possible way.  For now, I'm glad for the simple pleasure of the shared experience of going to the movies to take center stage.
